A good computer for robot control has a number of desirable attributes:

  • Small form factor
  • Light weight
  • Long battery life
  • Fast computation
  • Good wireless networking
  • Fast USB bus

  • Pros
    • Runs on 12v, and Tekkeon battery accepts 16v input. This means the FitPC can run on the Create ship's power. BIG WIN.
    • Small form factor
    • Extremely good wireless due to a large, external antenna
    • Superlative battery life with external Tekkeon battery
  • Cons
    • Runs very hot -- might even damage cheap plastic
    • No integrated keyboard or display is good for the form factor, but makes it very hard to set up or recover from crashes
    • Comparatively expensive, especially with the necessary separate battery
    • Lack of onboard camera hampers quick-and-dirty testing

Asus EeePC 1000PE

  • Pros
    • Nice comfortable keyboard for a netbook
    • Good battery life
  • Cons
    • Abysmal wireless -- inability to maintain connection for extended periods bodes ill for attempting long ssh hacking sessions
    • Worst CPU performance of the bunch

Lenovo Ideapad S10-2

  • Pros
    • Fastest CPU among the machines we've tested: 10% better than FitPC and 25% faster than Asus
  • Cons
    • No glaring deficiencies
